Middens are archaeological sites at which civilizations have discarded their waste, often resulting in multiple layers of objects left at different times. The layers represent the accumulation of memories and remnants of the past. In this exhibit, diverging memories are captured in different ways.
Like scientists uncovering layers of history in a midden, viewers of this exhibit can unravel embedded layers of meaning. You are invited to connect with your own memories as you contemplate the collective memories and experiences that are represented and expressed here.

Rusted railroad infrastructure, captured in silhouette and as casts on the Specimen wall, represents the passing of time and the accumulation of memories. Each rusty spike or rail clamp carries a history of the rail construction, the journeys taken, the people traveling, and the stories left behind, both told and untold.
